Trinity's Journey

In the year 1862 the Iowa Conference of the Evangelical Church at their 2nd
session passed a resolution stating, "Fort Dodge and surrounding
community shall be taken up as a Mission." The Rev. H. Hintze who lived in
Cedar Falls, Ia. was the first missionary, coming to Fort Dodge intermittently
to preach to a group of German people in the community. In 1865 the
Mission Class was incorporated as a congregation.

During the years 1868-69 the first church building as erected on the lot just
east of the present 1st United Methodist Church in downtown Fort Dodge.
The membership is reported to have been 22 persons.

By 1895 the membership had grown to 91 and the little church was crowded
for room, especially for Sunday school and Young People's activities. The
congregation purchased property at 13th St. and 1st Ave. South. This was
the first move of the congregation. This church building was dedicated on
Oct. 14, 1900. New articles of incorporation were filed under the name, "Zion
Church of the Evangelical Association."

In 1916, the name of the church was changed and became the First
Evangelical Church to conform to the merger of the Evangelical Association
and the United Evangelical Church.

When the Evangelical Church and the Church of the United Brethren in Christ
merged in 1946, it was necessary again to change the name of the church to
First Evangelical United Brethren Church.

The name was changed to Trinity United Methodist Church in 1968 following
the merger of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist
Church. At this time a new church building was constructed at its current
location at 838 North 25th Street, Fort Dodge, Iowa.

The congregation has always placed a high value upon Christian Education
for all ages, worshiping God, fellowship among the body and the
understanding that here at Trinity we are family.
