A WORD ABOUT OUR SACRAMENTS IN WORSHIP

Sacrament:  A Sacrament is a sacred Christian rite in which it is believed God’s
saving grace is uniquely active. St. Augustine defined a Sacrament as a “visible
sign of an invisible reality.”

Like most other Protestant denominations, United Methodists recognize only those
sacraments in which Jesus Christ Himself participated - Baptism and the Lord’s
Supper (Communion).

Baptism - We practice Baptism as a symbol of God’s forgiveness and a sign of
regeneration or new birth.  The vows that are made by an infant’s or child’s parents
at baptism are later assumed by the child when old enough to appreciate them,
usually at the time of Confirmation (when a person joins the church as a full
member). Baptism is administered through one of three ways, sprinkling, pouring or
immersion.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SCHEDULE A BAPTISM TO BE CELEBRATED AS A

The Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion) - We accept Christ’s words that, “God is a
spirit; and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”  We believe that
the bread and wine (juice) symbolize the body and blood of Christ, which are taken
in a spiritual manner - the sacrament of our salvation by Christ’s death.

We also embrace and celebrate other religious ceremonies such as liturgical
services, preaching, prayer, confirmation, marriage, funerals and family devotions,
but these are not considered sacraments in the United Methodist Church.

COMMUNION IS CELEBRATED THE FIRST SATURDAY AND SUNDAY OF EACH
MONTH AT TRINITY AND AT OTHER SPECIAL TIMES DURING THE CHURCH
YEAR.
